Below is a list of some of the most popular news sources available on the Internet today that we will be using as part of our news project:
Most Popular News (Google)
Google has been the most popular website on the Internet for some time now. Turning 12 in 2010, google has so many assets it is of no suprise that they have a very powerful news database and searchable index of articles. While many may prefer traditional news media outlets such as television and cable, millions now get their news by clicking article links provided by the Google news service and search engine. The most popular news article links appearing on this google page are updated very often, and since they track more unique hit counts than any other search engine or online website, you can rest assured that these articles are indeed an exceptional resource of genuinely popular news articles. While they contain links to articles, they also usually include news story photo thumbnails and news video links. Since they have taken over Youtube, they also are insure to include videos that appear there, many posted by news agencies that use Youtube as a primary or secondary means of distributing news related videos. The associated press itself uses Google's youtube asset for this purpose.

Most Emailed News (Yahoo!)
This resource is from Yahoo! News and provides a nice list of news headlines, stories and photos of the news articles that were emailed the most number of times through the Yahoo! mail service. It is improtant to mention that this data is for the Yahoo! News and Email accounts only, so it is not a true or accurate representation of every email sent in the world, but provides a good sampling from one of the largest online news aggregators and free email services out there on the net today.

Most Emailed Photos (Yahoo!)
This is also a collection from the Yahoo! News and Mail services by the #2 Most Popular Website and search engine. The photos are all taken from news stories on the net which Yahoo indexes on its news service. Again it does not represent every emailed picture but gives a nice sampling from Yahoo!.

Most Viewed News Articles (Yahoo!)
#3 in our set of the most popular news resources from Yahoo! News, this link will take you to a listing of the articles that were most actually viewed by those who clicked on the articles thru Yahoo's links. It doesn't accurately count every inbound click to these articles from other online resources or in any way monitor the actual unique visitor counts to these pages by the actual sites who provide the articles.

Most Recommened News Stories (Yahoo!)
This is the final entry here for Yahoo! News related pages. This resource simply provides articles based on the count of Yahoo service users who suggested the link to the article to their friends. Again, this can in no way account for all articles that were recommended today by every user on the internet.

Most Popular News (CNN)
This link will take you to CNN's pages showing you the most popualr news articles and videos viewed on their website. Once you open this link you will be taken immediately to the "Most Read" tabbed section. Other tabs include: "Most Watched", "Most Emailed", and "Most Commented". These are all based on actual unique visitor statistics that CNN monitors and analyzes throughout the day. Of course, they keep such actual counts to themseleves and their displays do not indicate the exact number of views for a particular article. They do however provide you with a number based ranking system for each tab.

Most Popular News (MS/NBC)
MSNBC is a popular cable news network and also operates as the primary news agency for all NBC affiliates as well as provides news services to clients and visitors of Microsoft owned MSN and Bing properties. Like CNN, this MSNBC news page will allow you to check out both the most viewed articles and videos of stories that appear within the content of the MSNBC news services. They also include a feature to see the most viewed slideshows. What they do here is group photos from like news stories into slideshows so you can see all the associated photos.

Most Popular News (ABC)
ABC is one of the big three original news networks that have been in the nationally synidcated news business well before cable and satellite ever made it into the mainstream media. This link will take you to a quick listing of the most read news stories, most viewed videos and most viewed slideshows today (all on a single page) and all to links on the ABC news website. While they monitor the unique visits to each component on the national news website, they also monitor the stories appearing on local station affiliate websites and combine that data here, but most stories of course are U.S. national news items.

Most Popular News (CBS)
CBS could have once been consider the leader in news media industry many years ago, however over the years their viewership has declined in most major markets. Still, they continue to do their best to compete. This page is probably not as well marketed as other pages on the CBS news website, but it does contain a listing of the most popular stories and blog posts on cbsnews.com. They also provide a list of the most popular photos and videos.

Fox News
Fox News is the most watched and therefore most popular news media organization today. They have no dedicated pages for viewing indexes of the most popular news or videos however. They do however have a tabbable selector on their home page that will show a listing of the most read news stories of the day. None of their RSS feeds or video pages have a breakdown option for what is the most popular on their site. Still, since they are such a popular news resource it would be wrong for us not to include them in this list.

This certainly is not a complete list of all of the popular news links out there. We will likely update this information for you soon broken down into pages classified by the type of news outlet, either broadcasters, online aggregators and search engines, newspapers, magazines and other news resource classifications. Our own headline database will work to combine available statistical information for these articles using our own internal tracking system and display a break down for the most popular news stories, photos and videos available online, complete with a searchable index. To begin however, what we may do is provide individual pages for each media organization and provide for easy navigation between news ranking provider resources.
